The everyday activities of modern life may well be causing you to suffer from pain, poor posture and a serious condition known as Forward Head Posture (“FHP”). FHP is a condition that can lead to significant risks to your health. To make matters worse, the pillow you use in hope of getting a good night’s sleep can very easily be increasing your health risks!
Experts tell us that good posture and a properly aligned spine are vital for a properly functioning nervous system and good health. Current research shows that the key to an optimally aligned spine is getting and maintaining a balanced alignment between your head and spine. “…The brain, spinal cord and nervous system controls and coordinates ALL of the body’s functions.” (Grays Anatomy).
When properly aligned, the head and spine effectively protects this delicate nerve control system. When not properly aligned, the force of gravity increases spinal pressure and mechanical stress, compressing delicate nerves that control the heart, lungs, kidneys, muscles and ALL cells and systems of the body.
Bottom line: ‘FHP’ causes head and spinal misalignment resulting in Malfunction of the nervous system, pain, poor posture and significant health problems.
So what is FHP all about?
FHP, or Forward Head Posture, is one of the most common abnormal postures in our modern society—IT CAUSES ‘core muscle’ weakness (proximal muscle de-stabilization) and is potentially one of the most harmful conditions to our overall health. ‘FHP’ is the most frequent CAUSE of most neck pain, low back pain, headaches, and spinal disc herniations (The Spinal Disc-degeneration Complex)
Simply put, FHP occurs when a person carries his or her head in a forward position, with the ears in front of the shoulder line. Common causes include: sleeping on a fat pillow, sitting in front of a computer screen for extended periods of time, looking down while reading, carrying a backpack, and driving —all activities that millions of people engage in every day.
Carrying the head in a forward position puts tremendous strain on the spinal column, particularly the cervical (neck) vertebrae. For every inch that the head moves forward and away from the body’s center of gravity, the weight bearing stress on the neck increases by about 10 pounds. That, in turn, damages nerves and creates stress on the entire central nervous system and can lead to a number of serious health conditions including:
- Spinal degeneration (Arthritis)
- Herniated discs
- Blood pressure problems
- Reduced lung capacity
- Tension Headaches
- Tingling in the arms and hands
- Facial pain
- Irritability
- Poor sleep
‘FHP’ can easily be seen as the rounded “hump” seen in countless older men and women. And studies now reveal that this condition is associated with a number of serious illnesses as well as an early death!
